Onwards and upwards! The Bokeh South Africa International Fashion Film Festival 2018 is prepped and ready to take you on a magic rollercoaster ride into the world of fashion film and glamour like never before! The prestigious festival, now in its fifth successful year, is charged and ready to get pulses racing with a host of new activities and international sponsors, culminating in the two prestigious Oscar-style red-carpet gala events to be held consecutively in both Johannesburg and Cape Town for the first time next year.

 

“The Festival has grown each year in size and scope and we can confidently say that our local South African production is now the premier global Fashion Film Festival, attracting a host of new best-of-breed partners and entrants from around the world. We are proud to announce that Pernod Ricard has recently aligned with us through Jameson Irish Whisky, as have the iconic Napa Valley winery, Sterling Vineyards, who have been the exclusive wine partner at the Oscars for more than 10 years, as well as US media powerhouse FNL Network, who broadcast to over 60-million viewers,” enthused Adrian Lazarus, Founder and Managing Director of the Mercedes-Benz Bokeh South Africa International Fashion Film Festival.

 

The evolution of the Festival now incorporates a series of structured monthly showcase events across SA, leading up to the gala events in April 2018. During these events, SA’s top local fashion film-making talent will be presented alongside international filmmakers in collaboration with the Bokeh partners. These ‘mini-festivals’ will deliver high level interaction between industry insiders, invited guests, VIPs, film makers, fashion designers, media and invited Bokeh fans for the full multi-sensory ‘Bokeh experience’. The annual calendar of events will create an innovative activation platform showcasing the aligned brand partners’ new products and, of course, the latest fashion film submissions from around the world. The events will also feature as an opportunity to create desirable marketing content which will be shared across all platforms and drive the Bokeh Fashion Film message to its fast-growing global audience.

The 10 planned hub events are all part of the lead-up to the ultimate grand finale in 2018, where two spectacular gala events will be hosted in Cape Town and Joburg, one week apart. These two spotlight events will comprise of an invited industry meet-and-greet on the Thursday evening, followed by a director’s daytime viewing experience on the Friday. In addition to viewing the chosen fashion films, guests will experience festival master classes, makeup expos as well as industry talks and presentations from top international guest speakers and leading industry professionals. The lead-up events all culminate with the glamorous Oscar-style red-carpet awards shows on 6 and 7 April 2018 in Cape Town, and 13 and 14 April 2018 in Johannesburg.

The name Carrol Boyes immediately brings to mind cutting-edge design in pure homeware.  Aptly termed Functional Art, it is these iconic sculptures that will be the beautiful awards for the category winners at the 2018 Bokeh Fashion Film Festival. “The creative collaboration between Fashion Film and Functional Art is revolutionary and we are delighted and honored to once again be a part of such an internationally acclaimed festival,” comments Taniya Miller, Account Executive at Carrol Boyes.

 

The festival’s aim of acknowledging and rewarding upcoming fashion and film talent is set to have more impact and reach than ever, having recently concluded a media deal with FNL media group in the USA, adding $30-million in broadcast value to the existing R60-million coverage generated by the partnership with Luxury Brands for the aligned brands during 2017. The FNL Network is broadcast in the USA to more than 60-million viewers, including those now deployed by cable operators such as Comcast, Charter and DirecTV, Film On TV and shortly, they will also be launching on Amazon Prime.

Red Bull Culture Clash event crew line-up announced

Red Bull Music Academy is a world-travelling series of music workshops and festivals. Two groups of 30 selected participants—producers, vocalists, DJs, and instrumentalists from around the world—come together in a new city each year for two weeks of collaborations, lectures, and performances.

The Academy began in 1998, and has been traversing the globe since. In 2010 it took place in London, when the first Culture Clash was hosted as part of a five week-long city festival.

Preparations for Red Bull Culture Clash are heating up at a rapid pace as headline artists AKA, DJ Tira, Patoranking and Admiral & Jahseed, enlist some of the industry’s top musicians to back their respective crews for an epic show that is being labelled the biggest live music battle experience the continent has ever seen.

Grit is Gold at Africa Property Investment Summit

The future of creative innovation & technology takes centre stage at 2017 Fak’ugesi Conference

With its bold and daring theme of ‘brave tech hearts beat as one’ the 2017 Fak’ugesi African Digital Innovation Festival will once again pioneer uniquely African technology and creativity in an electrifying ten-day programme, from 6 to 16 September, to showcase the power of innovative collaboration.

This year’s festival once again promises a unique, fresh and exciting line up of events, including, for the first time, the Fak’ugesi Conference taking place on 14 September. This one-day event titled “The Future of Creative Innovation” sets its focus on highlighting important conversations on the role of collaboration and interdisciplinary practice for creativity, technology and innovation in Africa.

The 2017 Fak’ugesi Conference will take a closer look at the present and future of collaborative practices and digital culture in Southern Africa and the Sub-Saharan region. Panellists and keynote speakers will also engage questions around inter and multidisciplinary digital practices in support of the growth of creative and community-led innovative technology in Johannesburg, South Africa and beyond.

The day’s events will be introduced by one of South Africa’s most well-established fine artists, William Kentridge, in a keynote address titled “Enough and More Than Enough”. Kentridge’s immense intellectual generosity and interest in young Johannesburg makers and artists through the Centre for the Less Good Idea, will lead to the first panel discussion with Kentridge and the Centre’s Season 2 Curators: Jamal Nxedlana, Nthlanthla Muthlangu and Tegan Bristow, chaired by Bronwyn Lace.

Following this, two fascinating panels will address the state of Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality, their current uses, and industry focus’ in Southern Africa. The first, supported by Maxum Digital (Innovation Hub) engages new South African practices in VR. The second, supported by Ericsson, takes a bold look at new Mixed Reality technologies and community led urban design.  These will run parallel to panels exploring the intersections of music, film and new technologies, in a double panel series curated by Weheartbeat in extension of the Fak’ugesi Beats Lab at the Festival. Each Fak’ugesi Beat panel features the cutting edge beat makers and videographers that have come to contribute to the 2017 Fak’ugesi Beats Lab and Festival Finale.

As one of the most distinguished ambassadors of digital culture and engagement in Africa, Jepchumba will deliver the second keynote address titled “The African Digital Renaissance, New Frontiers and New Territories”.  Jepchumba will then lead discussions into an extensive Pan-African conversation on questions facing digital culture on the continent. These discussions will also include contributions by participants in the ColabNowNow project; a ten-day program of digital storytelling and making that will take place during this year’s Fak’ugesi Festival.

2017 Festival Director, Tegan Bristow says, “The Fak’ugesi Conference and Festival not only allows for vital skills development and exchange but also acts as a platform where digital practices can be interrogated, questioned and collaboratively produced. It’s thanks to the Fak’ugesi Conference partners Tshimologong, Ericsson, Maxum Digital & Innovation Hub, French Institute and British Council Connect ZA that this is possible.”

After an exciting and thought-provoking programme, the 2017 Fak’ugesi Conference will close with a celebratory performance and beats demo by Fak’ugesi Beats Lab residents Masego from the UK and EvilNeedle from France.
