Smartphone photography is ablaze as phone manufactures race to outdo each other with camera enhancements. Now Chinese manufacturer Huawei is doubling down on the trend towards dual cameras with a new triple camera system on its P20 Pro flagship.

Unveiled in Paris on March 27, the new handset is set to hit the markets mid-April for the tall price of US$1,115

The new P20 Pro sees Huawei teaming up with German optical manufacturer Zeiss for a triple-lense camera capable of monochrome and triple zoom shots.

The phone’s triple camera system boasts a 40-megapixel colour sensor, as well as a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor and another 8-megapixel colour sensor with triple optical zoom.

Meanwhile the phone’s rounded 6.1-inch display (2240×1080 pixels) in a 19:9 format features OLED technology and comes with that trendy top notch to make room for the front-facing camera (24 MP).

Huawei is again using its eight-core processor from the P10 Pro, featuring its own Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to support Artificial Intelligence (AI). Huawei says the AI can also help optimise camera stabilisation by recognising scenes and objects while taking photos.

On the hardware front, Huawei’s flagship is among the first smartphones to feature an in-screen fingerprint reader that makes it possible to unlock the phone by pressing a finger down on the display. There’s also a fingerprint reader on the back of the phone for secure functions such as payments.

The phone weighs in at 174g and has a dust and water-resistant housing with a glass back. The phone features a massive 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage space, and it’s 4,000 mAh battery is capable of fast-charging.
