Basketball Africa League (BAL) comes to South Africa

The 2024 Basketball Africa League season will start in March 2024 with a new location in South Africa. The 2024 BAL season will begin on Saturday, March 9, and will include 12 club teams from 12 African nations, including three new clubs. The Kalahari Conference group stage will be held at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria on Saturday, March 9 until Sunday, March 17. The Kalahari Conference group phase will be followed by the Nile Conference group phase in Egypt during April, and the Sahara Conference group phase in Senegal during May.

By winning their respective national leagues, the champions of Angola, Egypt, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, and Tunisia qualified for the 2024 BAL season. Angola, Egypt, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, and Tunisia’s national league winners also qualified for the 2024 BAL season by winning their respective national leagues. The other six teams are from Burundi, Central African Republic, Libya, Morocco, South Africa, and Uganda. They qualified for the 2024 BAL through the Road to the BAL qualifying tournaments, which FIBA Africa hosted from October to November in 2023.

During the opening day of the Nile Conference, home team Al Ahly (Egypt) will start its title defence against the City Oilers (Uganda), a two-time BAL participant. Tickets are currently available at BAL.NBA.com and Ticketmaster.co.za (Pretoria) for the group phases of the Kalahari Conference in Pretoria and the Sahara Conference in Dakar. Single game tickets start at 75 ZAR for the Kalahari Conference group stage.

The top two teams from each conference as well as the top two teams from the other conferences’ standings will go to Rwanda for four seeding games. These will be followed by an eight-game single-elimination playoff round and the Finals will take place in Kigali during May and June. The dates for all the games will be announced once teams have been finalised.
