The largest visual arts festival returns to South Africa

Joburg is one of the world’s art cities, fuelled by a network of studio spaces throughout the inner city that gives life daily to the city’s status as an art capital. In 2022, The 2022 edition of OpenStudios.Joburg welcomed more than 2000 visitors, giving them access to over 100 working artists in their natural habitat. It’s May 2023, and they are back, with more artists and spaces for visitors to engage with.

Selected studios will be open on these two distinct days at OpenStudios.Joburg, which will take place over two days on Saturday, May 27, and Sunday, May 28, 2023. A shuttle service that connects the studios will enable guests to securely tour the city. Until 16:00pm, transportation between the buildings will be provided. Tickets for the Saturday, May 27, and Sunday, May 28, events went on sale on March 20, 2023, and are available for R55 each. Nando’s was announced as a sponsor of OpenStudios.Joburg. The promotion of Southern African innovation is something that Nando’s is genuinely passionate about. The business enjoys exposing the world to Mzansi’s artistic, musical, and design abilities.

The long-running Nando’s Art Initiative and the Nando’s Creativity programs that have followed it have made it so that many people around the world also identify Nando’s with vibrant Southern African art, even though it is best known for its PERi-PERi chicken and funny advertising. Nando’s expanded its art project to embrace five distinct artist development programs since it started investing in art in 2001. “Our programs have consistently funded more than 350 artists, and our work is on display at 1200 restaurants across 24 countries. According to Kirsty Niehaus, Nando’s Marketing Manager: Creativity Portfolio, “We have more than 21,000 works of art in our collection, making us the greatest private collector of contemporary South African art in the world.

“We’re excited to be partnering with OpenStudios.Joburg this year because it resonates deeply with us as a brand,” says Niehaus. “Our Nando’s head offices, known as Nando’s Central Kitchen, are in a historic part of Johannesburg that we have worked hard to showcase as a hub of creativity. This event not only gives visitors an opportunity to experience that creativity inherent in Joburg and in Nando’s for themselves, but to discover new art, artists and studios, and enjoy the work they are producing – all in the intimacy of the studio environment.”

Sifiso Temba, a former Nando’s Creative Exchange (NCX) artist, and Sello Letswalo, a Creative Block artist currently residing at the Spier Arts Trust studio space at Victoria Yards, will both take part in OpenStudios as part of this cooperation. On Sunday, May 28, Joburg will host event attendees, open their studio, and sell Creative Block artworks.

A three-month residency at August House has been sponsored for artist Mduduza Twala, who has more than 100 works of art in the Nando’s collection in Casa’s in South Africa and London. He also has the chance to showcase his skills at OpenStudios.Joburg. Nando’s has sponsored the NCX 2022 artists, Vilile Soha and Tanja, as an extension of NCX’s chance to give artists commercial exposure at RMB Latitudes.
