Thuli Phongolo and DJ Maphorisa break their silence over the assault case

After recent allegations of an alleged domestic quarrel between them, DJ and producer Maphorisa, and actress Thuli Phongolo have spoken out. Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, also known as DJ Maphorisa, was charged with assault with the purpose to cause great bodily harm and appeared in the Randburg magistrate’s court last week.

The well-known amapiano DJ was detained after he was accused of hitting his partner inside her Sandton apartment. He is currently free on a R4,000 bail after Phongolo submitted a declaration of withdrawal, and agreed to the accused’s release on bail. The pair addressed the numerous accounts about the event that were circulating online in a joint statement they made on Monday night. Given that they are prominent personalities, it is inevitable that the general public, the media, and each of their respective business partners will be interested in this issue. As a result, they have determined that this joint statement should be considered the sole and official declaration in the case.

“The matter has received mixed public attention, causing a great deal of emotional stress on both parties involved. It is on this basis that the parties have elected to resolve this matter privately through their respective management and legal teams. Consequently, Phongolo has since withdrawn the charges laid against Sekowe.”

They went on to say: “Both parties have noted with concern, the disparaging, defamatory and (in some instances) untrue remarks, statements and reports emanating from the incident and view these in a serious light. The parties reserve their rights to individually pursue legal action against people making defamatory and/or false statements in relation to this matter.”

The couple’s representatives said that all Sekowe and Phongolo wanted was “to return to their respective fields of work after the now concluded private resolution of this matter”.

“Neither of the parties have any intention to allow this private matter to impact their respective, or the other party’s brand and professional interests. They request the public to give them the time and space to return to their work unhindered. No further statements will be made in this regard.”

Sekowe’s assault case was delayed until June 14 so that the accused could address the NPA in light of the actress’s withdrawal statement.
