AKA’s ‘Sponono’ featuring Sjava gets released as a new radio single

Late rapper AKA’s platinum-selling album “Mass Country” now features a second posthumously released track from the artist. Prior to his terrible death, AKA and KDDO released previous single “Company” together.

“Sponono,” a fan favourite from the album, has been shared to radio this week as his latest single release, according to Sony Music Africa. Sjava, 031 Choppa, and Baby S.O.N. are featured in “Sponono.” Since the release of “Mass Country” in February, “Sponono” has received over 2.6 million streams worldwide and has already been given an official gold certification in South Africa.

“In celebration of the milestone, the single is officially being sampled to national radio, creating a platform for the featured artists to honour AKA through various supporting activities,” said Sony Music Africa in a press release.

“’Sponono’ is an ode to love, an unashamed expression of love and appreciation by a man in love. The term itself is a Sotho term, used to refer to the utmost beauty of a black woman, praising her beauty and affirming her.”

AKA declares in a line that is devoted to his partner Nadia Nakai that “this is real love, it’s ride or die.”

031 Choppa, who also contributed to the co-production and co-writing of the song, spoke about the process of creating the song and his relationship with AKA. He said,  “Wrote this hook thinking about the love of my life, my Sponono. And on this song I’m expressing that I would do whatever it takes to be with her”.

“I produced the beat with the gents thinking I was just gonna produce then me and Son started vibing out then Forbes walked in and said that’s the hook for the beat. The rest is history.”
