US rapper Swae Lee receives backlash for using Nigerian flag on a Amapiano tweet

Swae Lee popularly known for his fantastic catchy beats, left fans surprised when he said he would be releasing new music, notably songs with an amapiano influence. The musician wasn’t particularly eager to experiment with the genre like many US artists who are now riding the amapiano wave.

When he tweeted, “Wait till y’all hear Swae Lee on Amapiano,” he however used the flag of Nigeria. Naturally, that caused quite a stir, especially considering that amapiano was a South African origin. Midway through  2010, Amapiano, a subgenre of Kwaito and House Music, was born in Johannesburg and has since become extremely popular all over the world.

Twitter users were eager to correct him, amongst them was local urban culture account called SA HIP HOP 247, which commented by sayings: “Amapiano is a south african genre, at least make researches about the genre fam.” The musician most likely didn’t anticipate being dragged for the tweet and responded by saying, “Woooooah I never said anything about who was the first guys I just said wait until y’all hear my amapiano songs 🧐 y’all reached for that one”.

Later, in defence of his tweet, Swae Lee posted a video on YouTube that featured the South African flag this time, all in reaction to the criticism. Furthermore he penned an apology message expressing regret, the message read:

“I never discredited nobody. Sorry y’all read it that way. I never said anything about its origins in that tweet. I was just letting my fans know I’m tapped in and been cooking some amapiano style songs. Salute to the history of amapiano and the first creators of it. I’m not taking that away from anybody. Much love and stay tuned”.
