South African’s respond to Wiz Khalifa’s plans to release an amapiano song

There has been a lot of discussion about US rappers being interested in amapiano during the past several months. Earlier this month, Swae Lee happily announced on Twitter that he was working on some amapiano music, but he faced criticism when it seemed like he was attributing the sound to Nigeria.

Now, Grammy-winning US rapper Wiz Khalifa has revealed that he is also working on some exclusive amapiano tunes. In an Instagram Live video, he said, “Y’all gonna get some amapiano songs from me, probably next year.”

Wiz Khalifa was previously seen jamming to “Zula Zula” by Khanyisa and Focalistic. In response, social media users expressed their disapproval of US rappers joining the sound.

Mzansi amapiano artists such as Uncle Waffles have been gaining popularity internationally and performing abroad. Beyoncé was recently seen dancing to her first hit track “Tanzania” while on her current world tour.

Waffles has also performed all over the world, notably at Coachella, and has been co-signed by celebrities including Drake, Kelly Rowland, and Ciara.
